This is the first release for the Renegade Lights crew, a diverse group of artists from San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles. I’m proud to be a member. It’s electronic music from all across the multiverse, and beautifully showcases the range of sound and performance to be experienced at one of our performance events.

Here’s a full preview of my own track on the comp, We Are Not Human. The raw materials for this song go back a few years to a protest at the DHS stronghold in downtown San Francisco that got out of hand. I captured hours of it with my trusty field recorder. After extensive edit maneuvers and manipulations, a single vocal phrase became the seed for this track.

You can hear full previews for the entire release on the Renegade Lights site. Massive heartbeats to all my Renegade comrades and especially to the Man With The Plan, Renegade Lights’ owner/operator Raja The Resident Alien.

All great things to come.

I Miss The Alligators

The Houston/New Orleans three show, Southern Comfort mini-tour was smashing. Good people, amazing sets, nights of sound lasting until the literal crash of dawn. Next time I’m hoping to have processed alligator samples for my set.

For now, I’ve returned to San Francisco, the studio and all my beloved machinery. I’m finishing off a track to be included in Raja The Resident Alien’s coming Renegade Lights compilation release. More soon.

A string of three Wolf Interval shows upcoming. LiveAlive on Thursday 020110721 at Hard Racks in Houma. On Friday 020110222, I’ll be dropping a set for a wicked, private event held at Wisdom Studios. Thanks to the wonderful people at Gumbo Labs, New Orleans’ amazing hackerspace, we ended up with a much better event at Wisdom after our scheduled venue failed hard. Wrapping up the journey is what promises to be an amazing night of sound and performance at the first Houston Interface event on 020110723. Stellar crews at all three shows will make this a southern swing to remember.

Strange Instruments Approach

Max For Live has reached a refined version, and SerialOSC is out of its incubator… I’ll begin releasing a series of Strange Instruments soon. These are the end results of various experiments with synthesis, sample mangling and math hacking in Max. I’m pouring through the array and assessing my entire catalog of Max/MSP/Jitter work over the last decade: cleaning up, modifying, updating, merging, reifying. Everything will be optimized and both moved into Max For Live and shaped into beautifully compact Max patches for use with a Monome or Arc. As I port, they’ll be released to the Max/MSP, Monome and Max For Live communities under the Question Your Beliefs License – Noncommercial.

A mountain of noise will be made.

Two Hundred Percent Fantastic

Renegade Lights 2 was off the chain. Everyone’s sets were blazing, the place was packed and the crowd was rowdy. Definitely one for future events to live up to. Next show: Chicago, 020110520 at Transamoeba.

Beautiful

Written by . Filed under Video. Comments Off.

Between working on mixes for Wolf Interval’s debut EP, Night’s Black Agents, I created a track as part of the Monome Community Remix Project, v9. The MCRPs are exercises in limited resources, and kick creativity into high gear. The theme for this outing was film, and the pool of samples artists had to work with were bits and pieces of music and dialog snaked from movies. Beautiful was the result. It’s amazing how different all of the MCRP v9 tracks are. Same sample pool, sometimes the same samples, always unique results.

Bringing this film-focused MCRP full circle, fellow Monomist Bite, aka Jose Barrera, used Beautiful as the soundtrack for a gorgeous video he created immediately after the public release of all MCRP tracks.
